Coconut Oil Mill Refining Process
In the present study, in the coconut oil mill refining process, neutral oil loss (distillative and mechanical carry-over) during physical refining of coconut oil mill refining process was quantified. Neutral oil loss seems to depend on both the crude oil quality and the process conditions during deodorization. The distillation of volatile glyceridic components (monoand diglycerides), originally present in the crude coconut oil, was confirmed as the major cause for the neutral oil loss. The amount of these volatile components in crude coconut oils cannot be derived as such from the initial free fatty acid content. A lower deodorization pressure with less sparge steam resulted in a larger neutral oil loss than a higher pressure with more steam.
Coconut oil mill refining process consists of a series of refining procetures. the coconuts are at first cracked into pieces while the coconut meat is allowed to be dried. When it is dried, the coconut's meat or flesh is hydraulically pressed at 100 - 130 degrees in order to extract the oil. The resulting oil is passed through a filter press to produce the finished material, but it still has to go through the RBD (refining, bleaching and deodorizing) process.
This physical coconut oil mill refining process is entirely acceptable and approved under organic processing regulations. Note that the items added during the coconut oil mill refining process (citric acid, activated charcoal, and diatomaceous earth) are classified as “processing aids” and not additives because they are entirely removed during processing and are not found in the finished product.
